1997 F250 HD WITH THE 7.3 TURBO DIESEL

ONE OF THE HEAVIEST ENGINES MADE FOR PASSENGER CARS, THE 7.3 POWERSTROKE WEIGHS 970LBS DRY, WHEN MOST ENGINES WEIGH AROUND 500 WITH OIL!


I FOUND THIS TRUCK OUT IN GEORGIA FOR $2500, AND IT HADENT RUN FOR OVER 5 YEARS!  WE COULD VERIFY COMPRESSION AND THE ROTATING ASSEMBLY WITH STARTER FLUID, BUT COULD NOT GET IT TO RUN ITSELF.


AFTER HOURS OF TRYING TO MESS WITH THINGS, I MANAGED TO GET THE ENGINE TO IDLE... I PROBABLY AGED MY STARTER 5 YEARS WORTH IN 2 DAYS CRANKING THE MECHANICAL FUELPUMP.

 
WHEN I FIRST GOT THE 250 TO IDLE IT WAS VERY WEAK AND YOU HAD TO SLOWLY BRING IT DOWN TO 550 RPMS, JUST DROPPING THE GAS PEDAL WOULD MAKE IT STALL IN NEUTRAL.


THIS IS WHEN I NOTICED THAT THE DRIVERSIDE EXHAUST WASNT HEATING UP.  A DEAD COMPUTER CHIP FOR CYLINER 7 INJECTION CAUSED A PROTECTION MODE FOR THE ENTIRE BANK.
AFTER REPLACING THE COMPUTER THE TRUCK WOULD RUN AND IDLE, BUT STILL TOOK NEARLY THE FULL DRAINING OF 2 12V BATTERIES TO START...

THE CAUSE? BAD INJECTOR CUPS LEAKING ALL THE FULL INTO THE CYLIDERS. WHEN DID I FIGURE THS OUT? MAYBE 6 MONTHS LATER?

THE 250 GOT A NEW 1000FTLB RATED TRANSMISSION INSTALLED AT A BUDDIES HOUSE IN NOVEMBER OF 2021 IN AN ATTEMPT TO PULL A 26FT TRAVEL TRAILER TO CALIFORNIA...
YEAH WE DIDNT MAKE IT.  THE 250 STARTED OVERHEATING WITHIN 10 MILES, FOCING US TO SWITCH VEHICLLES, AND THE TRIP ENDED WITH US LOOSING 2 WHEELS AND NEEDING NEW AXLES FOR THE TRAILER...
IT WAS NOT A GOOD TRIP TO SAY THE LEAST!

EVENTUALLY THE F250 MADE IT BACK TO MY PLACE WHERE IT SAT WITH THE HEADS OFF FOR MONTHS, ALL BECAUSE OF LEAKING INJECTOR CUPS.
A JOB YOU CAN DO IN THE CAR, BUT I MAKE A CUSTOM ATTACHMENT AND TOOK THE 150LBS HEADS OFF WITH A HOIST JUST TO REBUILD EVERYTHING.

THERE HAVE DEFINITELY BEEN ALOT OF FUEL DELIVERY ISSUES ON THIS TRUCK, SITTING FOR 5 YEARS WILL CAUSE ALOT OF BUILD UP AND CRUD THAT NEEDS PROPER CLEANING.
SINCE BECOMING MY UNFORTUNATE VICTIM, THE 250 HAS BEEN REPAIRED WITH NEW FUEL TANKS, NEW PUMPS, ELECTRIC PUMPS, NEW STARTER, TONS OF EXTRA FUEL LINES, BUT ALL OF IT WAS WORTH IT BECAUSE IT CAN FIRE UP THAT 7.3L BEAST IN UNDER 1.5 SECONDS!

IVE THOUGHT ABOUT SELLING THIS TRUCK SO MANY TIMES, BUT EVERY SINGLE TIME I GET THAT ENGINE IDLING AND ROCKING THE TRUCK CAB, I FALL IN LOVE ALL OVER AGAIN. EVERYONE NEEDS A 7-TREE IN THEIR LIFE!
